International Engineering Job Market. It's life Jim, but not as we know it !!

What a difference six months and a global recession makes?

The world has changed. Suddenly nuclear energy is back on the agenda as an alternative to oil alongside bio-fuels, solar, wind and other "clean" energy sources.

It doesn't matter that the world's experts and scientist's have been telling us for decades about oil running out and the need to reduce carbon emissions, suddenly the idea has become sexy and en vogue.

When an oil giant such as the United Arab Emirates (which used to claim around 10% of the world's known oil reserves) starts to make plans to design and build 5 or 6 Nuclear power plants your ears have to prick up. Isn't that like "Taking coals to Newcastle" or "Selling ice to the Eskimos"?

It appears that in the long term the UAE has been advised that it will be more economical to use nuclear energy to power it's cities and industries rather than using it's own oil reserves or gas from neighbouring Qatar. Oil's nickname as "Black-Gold" certainly seems to be coming true.

In Australia, the only Mining projects showing any sign of life (in addition to Gold) are Uranium projects. The big private-enterprise projects of the next five to ten years appear to be energy based rather than manufacturing based (power generation rather than minerals used in manufacturing). Oil and Gas projects in the North and North West of Australia and the infrastructure (roads and rail) and ports needed to transport and process those products. There are many infrastructure projects in the pipeline for the Eastern States also but these appear to be mostly government funded to keep unemployment at bay and reward those states that put Kevin Rudd and the federal labour party back in power.

The next six months will be very interesting?
